Yan Lohendra is an artist-producer, composer, songwriter and visual creator. He writes, arranges, records, mixes and masters much of his music himself, and has spent many years developing an independent body of work at the crossroads of rock, electronic music and more contemplative soundscapes.
Trained in academic research through doctoral level before moving into the field of information technology, he has always maintained a close relationship with tools, ideas and independent forms of creation. His interest in Linux and open-source software is not merely a technical choice: it reflects his commitment to the free circulation of knowledge and to making art as independently as possible. His album Upsilon Plus was produced entirely using Linux.
Contemplation holds a central place in both his life and his work. He has practised Buddhist meditation daily for more than fifteen years and enjoys walking through rugged landscapes, far from noise and agitation. This distance from the contemporary world does not amount to complete withdrawal, but rather provides a way of preserving the inner space that creation requires.
Today, Yan Lohendra creates and directs YLSHAA, an artistic persona and dark art-rock singer. Through her, he brings together music, writing, imagery and storytelling within a single universe. At the same time, he continues to pursue his own musical work, guided by the conviction that significant works are built over time—sometimes away from public view, but never far from the need to create.
